Tryon Palace

Tryon Palace, located about an hour southeast of Cutter Creek in New Bern, NC, is one of North Carolina's best historic sites. In 2007, Tryon Palace was voted Best Historic Site by METRO Magazine out of Raleigh, NC. At Tryon Palace, you can explore the history of North Carolina from its conception to the mid twentieth century. From exploring historic buildings to taking part in activities from the past, there is something for everyone at Tryon Palace.

Tryon Palace, originally built in the late 1760's, was the capitol building and home of William Tryon, the first governor of the colony of North Carolina. After the Revolutionary War, the building was still used as the capitol and home of the first four governors of the state of North Carolina. In 1791, a ball was held to honor George Washington, who stopped through New Bern on his Southern Tour. While at Tryon Palace, you, too, can dance in the tracks of history.

Don't forget to stop by the kitchen and stable offices, where many of the servants of the palace spent their time. This is a great place to try out spinning, weaving, and other crafts from the colonial times.

Tryon Palace is decorated in fine English furnishings. Governor Tryon made an extensive inventory of the décor, which was later used to refurbish the palace. Guides are dressed in period costumes and provide tours throughout both floors of the building.

Visiting Tryon Palace during the holiday season is always a popular choice with families. The palace and four other historic homes are lavishly decorated with Christmas decorations and special activities are planned daily. Candlelight tours are available at this time and you can take part in a Jonkonnu Celebration, an eighteenth century North Carolina African American Christmas custom.

Midsummer is also a popular time to visit Tryon Palace. Independence Day calls for a huge celebration at the palace; after all, Tryon Palace played a huge role in the conception of our state and country. Fireworks are fun for the whole family and more special events are planned for extra fun.

If you are an enthusiastic gardener, make sure not to miss Tryon Palace's 14 acres of historic gardens. The gardens follow the history of America through three centuries, starting with the colonial period up to the mid-twentieth century revival gardens. Although they change each season, the tulips of spring and the chrysanthemums of fall are the most spectacular views the gardens have to offer. Even if you choose to go during the celebrations during the summer or fall, the gardens will still have a beautiful variety of flowers and greens for you to learn about and enjoy.
