Wilson, NC, a city of 50,000, is just 25 miles to the northwest of Cutter Creek. It has one of the largest antique markets in the state, along with delicious eastern North Carolina barbeque, museums, and much more.
Wilson isn't the largest of cities, but it has a lot to brag about. Wilson was ranked first in the state and 13th nationally in 2006 for economic strength among cities of 50,000 or less. The city is also instating a fiber optic network that will make high-speed Internet available to businesses and homes alike.
Wilson is also known for its large antique market. There are numerous antique shops in the area, as well as the Greater Wilson Antique Market. With a mix of collectibles and true antiques, there will be something for everyone.
If you want to get away, Wilson has the transportation to make that happen. Wilson has an airport, Amtrak station, and bus transit system within the city limits. Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport is about 15 minutes from Wilson and also serves the city. Both of these airports connect with Raleigh-Durham International Airport in Raleigh, one of the state's major airports.
Take the kids to the Imagination Station in downtown Wilson. There they can learn about biology, chemistry, and physics while having a fun. Buy some chocolate-covered novelties from the gift shop to chomp on and make sure to race the cheetah in the simulation animal run while you're there.
The Arts Council of Wilson hosts a variety of shows to suit every taste. Most are held in the Edna Boykin Center for Performing Arts, a restored Vaudeville theater built in 1919. In 2006 and 2007, the center's headline program was Theater of the American South, a program about Southern history and culture.
One of Wilson's biggest attractions is the annual Whirligig Festival. Artists from the area are invited to showcase their whirligigs, which are works of air powered by the air, very similar to windmills. Nationally recognized artist and Wilson County native Vollis Simpson creates many pieces of art for the festival. Come to Wilson during the first weekend in November and enjoy the show.
After spending the day in Wilson, enjoy the best cuisine in the east with a dinner from Parker's Barbeque or Bill's Barbeque. Go for the buffet and fill your plate with authentic Eastern North Carolina barbeque, Brunswick stew, fried chicken, and much more.
Bring your new treasures home to Cutter Creek, North Carolina's best kept secret.
